How To Improve Your MCAT Score

How To Improve Your MCAT Score The MCAT is the cornerstone of your entire med school application process. Its where your acceptance conversation begins. And it may be the most important factor in your application. You can actually improve your MCAT score. Its not easy, but it can be done. The following tips can help: Practice tests: Youve probably heard it before, but this is THE BEST WAY to improve your MCAT score. Practicing helps your brain organize and structure its thinking around the format and rigor of the MCAT. Practice tests can also rapidly improve your speed, allowing you to answer more questions. Click here for free practice tests from the Association of American Medical Colleges. Pace your practice tests: The way you practice can make a huge difference. Try to take one practice test a week, every week preferably every Saturday morning because thats when youre going to take your real test. Its the same idea as cramming for a test versus studying in smaller increments. Pacing yourself gives your brain a chance to learn and process the information presented on the MCAT, rather than memorizing concepts and patterns. Maintain consistency: Your brain likes sameness; so try to emulate the real test as much as possible. Take full-length practice tests when you can. Also do not take breaks longer than youre given on the test and take the test at the same time in the morning. Do this for 12 weeks, and you will boost your mental endurance. Then you will begin to see rapid improvements. Answer every question: There is no penalty for an incorrect answer; so make sure you have an answer to every multiple choice question before time runs out. If youre going to flat-out guess, select B or C because there are more correct answers for those options. Learn howMCAT tutorscan help you improve your chances of acceptance into a top med school. Do not dwell on questions: Youre not going to get every question right. So, dont spend lots of time on challenging questions. If its a tough, time-consuming question you may not even get it right in the first place. Answer the easier, less time-intensive questions first; then move on to the more difficult ones. Use a MCAT study book: They are not difficult to find, and nearly any book can help improve your score. The books will show you patterns, common pitfalls and skills you need to perform better on the MCAT. Also, buy the most recent edition of the book because test makers are constantly updating the MCAT, and a new edition can reflect those updates. Work with a one-on-one tutor: Its really easy to figure out where you struggle. Anyone can do that by taking a practice test. But, then how do you improve in those areas? Thats the real challenge to raising your MCAT score. Working with a tutorcan help you rapidly improve in your most problematic areas; so you can fine tune your skills on other sections. Taking classes on the MCAT could also be a good idea, but a tutor can tailor each session to your specific needs. Balanced diet: Everybody says you should eat a big breakfast the day of the test. Well, everybody is wrong. Eating a gigantic breakfast is only going to make you tired during the test. Your body will be using energy to break down your food, energy that should be spent focusing on the MCAT. Eating a smaller, high-protein meal of eggs, nuts, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc and lots of fruit can help give you energy for the big test. Set a routine: How early will you need to wake up on test day to eat a well-balanced meal, get your mindset right and be ready for the test? Say, its 7 am. Then, you should wake up every day at 7 am 7-10 days before the test. Eventually, your body will be used to getting up that early, and you wont feel as tired. Also, dont pound Red Bulls in the morningunless thats what you do every morning. Try to mimic the exact same morning for 7-10 days, and you will feel great on test day. Flash cards: Make these your best friend while you are preparing for your MCAT. Write down any concepts, equations and other information you are struggling with and carry your flash cards anywhere. Constantly review these before class or work or while youre working out/walking around. This will give your brain a chance to spread out its learning. Do not try to cram your studying for the MCAT please this isnt your freshman biology class. Keep confidence: Not everyone takes the exact same test, and by nature some tests are more difficult. There can be up to 10 variations of the MCAT on test day, and each is graded on its own curve and scored differently. So, dont get discouraged if your questions seem incredibly difficult. For example, eight correct answers on a difficult test may yield a higher score than 11 correct answers on an easier test. About the test: The MCAT is a 5.5 hour, computer-based test. You can only take it three times in one year. The test is scheduled to undergo minor changes in 2015, as the questions will be updated to reflect advancements in the medical field. It is designed to measure your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The test is comprised of four sections: Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, Biological Sciences and WritingSample. Each section (except writing) has 40-52 questions and is 60-70 minutes long. Sections are scored 1-15, and the writing section is scored alphabetically from J (lowest possible score) to T (highest possible score). The writing section is not as important as the other sections, but you can draw attention (positive or negative) if you have a really high or low score.

How to Ensure Healthy Eating at Exam Time - ALOHA Mind Math

How to Ensure Healthy Eating at Exam Time Exams for kids can turn out to be a time of stress and food might either be exploited or ignored at such a time. While handing out that pack of chips might seem like the easiest solution, it is definitely not the healthy one. Here are some tips on how to help your kids eat smart and fuel their body and brain at exam time: Eating at regular intervals: Rather than 3 heavy meals a day which will leave the kids in a sleepy state after each one, aim to give them smaller but more regular meals over the course of the day. This ensures that they receive the dose of energy and nutrition that you need, but keeps their brain alert as well. Stock up on fruit: Fruits could serve as the easiest form of a healthy snack at the time of exams. A banana is just about a perfect snack with the amount of energy that it provides at one go through its natural sugars. Some other options are blueberries, apples, prunes and raisins. Nuts like almonds and walnuts, or a bowl of yogurt could serve as good additions to the fruit. Pic source: http://bit.ly/1vSSqaG Keep easy recipes and ingredients handy: A loaf of multigrain or whole-wheat bread is a great base to keep around for kids to make into a snack when they need one. You could also freeze some prepped and individual meals for them to easily reheat and use when needed. Some other easy meal ideas include whole-wheat muffins with veggies in them, baked potatoes and cottage cheese. Don’t forget the fluids: It is very important to stay hydrated especially at times of high intensity like preparation for exams, as dehydration can cause a loss of concentration as well among other physical symptoms. Keep bottles of water and fresh fruit juice at your child’s side at all times, and remind them to drink a glass regularly. It is recommended that your child consume between 1.5 to 2 liters of fluids in the course of a day. We hope that these easy eating tips should help you make your children eat healthy at times of stress and stay well-prepared to face the next exam. Many reception shildren can not sit properly - Tutor Hunt Blog

Many reception shildren can not sit properly Ofsted report says many reception children can`t sit properly, or even hold a pencil Ofsted report says many reception children can`t sit properly, or even hold a pencil Primary schoolsRecent Ofsted inspectors have issued some dismaying news, saying that a third of five year olds lack the knowledge they should possess after completing their first year of school. Some of the skills the children are lacking are fairly basic and undemanding ones, such as how to sit properly at the table, or how to hold a pencil correctly. Ofsted have said that reading should be the focus of reception, and that it is vital teachers read stories, poems and rhymes to their pupils. There must be appropriate reading material available, so the children can practice the lessons they should be learning in their phonics. The way children have been taught to read in school has undergone drastic changes over recent years, and phonics are a big part of that shift. Working alongside guided reading, and shared reading (more traditional techniques) phonics help children identify the building blocks of words - called phonemes. In their new report `Bold Beginnings` Ofsted stress the importance of teachers using phonics, and their associated techniques, to help children learn learn to read during their reception year: `Systematic synthetic phonics played a critical role in teaching children the alphabetic code and, since this knowledge is also essential for spelling, good phonics teaching supported children`s early writing.` This report stresses the importance of laying a good foundation for a child`s education, and is explicit with its warning about the potential consequences of an ineffective first year on a child`s future: `A good early education is the foundation for later success. For too many children, however, their Reception Year is a missed opportunity that can leave them exposed to all the painful and unnecessary consequences of falling behind their peers.` The report was commissioned by Her Majesties Chief Investigator (HCMI) in 2017, and during the summer term inspectors visited primary schools `in which children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, achieved well.` The `disadvantaged children` refer to those who are eligible for free school meals, though it seems strange that their inclusion need be pointed out. Some key findings from the report as as follows:Story time is part of the daily routine, and teachers cite it for helping to develop children`s vocabulary, comprehension, and overall language skills. In well performing schools children were adept in their spelling of phonically regular words, as well as common exception words. These schools also attended carefully to children`s pencil grip, along with their posture.Reception lacks a clear curriculum, leaving teachers to develop their own teaching plans. Elg`s (Early Years Foundation) provided a framework, and teachers went well beyond the EYFSP (The early years foun dation stage profile) in their teaching.Headteachers were of the opinion that the reception year is `fundamental to their school`s success,` believing that these early steps in education will have fundamental ramifications in the child`s later life. The head of Ofsted Amanda Spielman made it clear how important she values the first year of school to be: `Reception should not just be a repeat of what children learned in their nursery or pre-school, or with their childminder. ; They deserve better than facing years of catching up. The best schools know how to design their curriculum so that children`s learning and development sets them up well for the rest of their schooling. Reading should be at the heart of the Reception year.` The learning capacity of children is truly astounding - they can learn with greater ease than adults can. If you doubt this try learning a second language past the age of 30. You may, after much time and effort, achieve some proficiency, but you will never approach the fluency a child attains in the same language. It is because of brain plasticity that babies and children (and even foetuses, according to many scientists) can learn at such a heightened level. Most of us learn our first language without any `formal` lessons - we just assimilate, as if by osmosis, the words and sentences of our parents and friends. This learning capacity diminishes rapidly with age - some scientists claim that it drops off sharply around the age of 8. This strongly suggests that we want children to have the very best education in their early years. Interestingly though (and just to confuse the matter!) many Scandinavian countries don`t enrol their children into school until the age of 7. In Finland for example, children don`t start their schooling until they are seven - and they came fifth in the 2015 Pisa science rankings - with the UK far behind in 15th place. 2 years ago0Add a Comment

The Journey to Learning Spanish for Beginner Students

The Journey to Learning Spanish for Beginner Students Learning a foreign language is by no means a piece of cake, but it is definitely not impossible. Back in middle school, I remember when I first found out that I would be taking Spanish classes, I was quite nervous. However, I quickly found myself very interested, and I developed my own strategies to effectively learn Spanish and do well in my future Spanish courses. I am not from a Spanish speaking country and I do not have any Spanish speaking friends. Fortunately, both in middle school and high school, I was able to receive a Spanish achievement award during the awards ceremonies. The strategies that I developed will guide students to excel in their beginner as well as more advanced Spanish courses.1. Have a Solid Knowledge of the Basics. As a student, you must be able to know the basics in the Spanish language. By basics I mean the alphabet, colors, days of the week, months, seasons, and etc. You should also know the definition of basic words such as name, age, and origin. The next step to knowing the basics is repetition. You must make flashcards with pronunciations, and also you must write out each new word multiple times in order to memorize the correct spelling.2. Translate the familiar words first. When you read a sentence and don’t understand the meaning of a sentence, translate word by word. For instance, ¿Quantos años tienes? may seem unclear at first, however, if you translate each word, the question will make a lot of sense. Quantos means How many? Años means years, and tienes means you have. By translating each word you can figure out that the question is asking about your age. This is a simple example, however, you can use the same tactics for more complex questions/ sentences. You can even pick out children’s Spanish books and translate each word to practice your translation skills.3.Familiarize yourself with the infinitive form and all of the conjugations. The infinitive form of the verb has AR, ER, or IR ending such as hablar, comer, and v ivir. Make sure you know that the infinitive form is to+ verb such as hablar is to + speak. Many people confuse the conjugated forms of the verb. Therefore, make sure you know that hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, and hablan all refer to the verb hablar which means to speak. However, they do not mean the same thing, each form refers to its own pronoun. For instance, when you see the word hablan do not say it automatically think that it means to speak, recognize that this verb is conjugated and it refers to THEY speak.4. Repetition, repetition, repetitionI can not stress enough repetition can help you learn quickly.Make notes, flashcards, and repeat the new words as much as possible. Another great way of memorizing is writing out the names of objects in Spanish on a sticky note and sticking it to the corresponding object. For instance, you can put a sticky note with the word SILLA on a chair, MESA on a table, and etc. Each time you will look at these objects you will see the Spanish t ranslation along with the correct spelling.5. Watch Videos.Nowadays, we all go on youtube and watch some sort of a video in varying lengths. Every once in a while, just search for a Spanish movie with Spanish subtitles and also English subtitles. You do not have to watch an entire episode, you can just watch a few minutes every day. When you read the previous sentence, you might think why Spanish subtitles? Well, reading the Spanish subtitles will allow you to get better at spelling, and also sometimes the actors might speak too fast, so if you read the subtitles you might better understand the meaning. Also, the English subtitles will allow you to get the meaning of simple and more complex words. For instance, after you hear the word VAMOS, or ¿Que Paso? multiple times you will quickly learn their meaning since Spanish speaking people use them a lot.

5 Things to Talk About in Your College Study Group

5 Things to Talk About in Your College Study Group 5 things to talk about in your college study group Every student should either join or start a study group once they get to college. Not only can a study group help students get a higher grade but they can be a great emotional support during this important life transition. In many cases, members of a study group become fast friends and can help each other academically throughout their entire college career. The more engaged each member of the study group is the more likely everyone will be to find success when it comes to their education and academic life. There are some things students can talk about and topics they can bring up to make their study group more interesting and connected. 1.   Common problems Most college students will find out right away that they have several problems in common. Freshmen are usually focusing on their transition and seniors are usually focusing on graduating and finding a job. Unfortunately, many students feel entirely alone and isolated because they dont know that other people are going through the same thing. Its important for study groups to identify common problems whether its an extra challenging professor, a social situation on campus, or having difficulty finding a good class to take next term. Once students start to identify with each other, they reduce the isolation and tend to be able to focus more on academics. 2. Creative solutions There is more than one way to solve a problem and students are encouraged to brainstorm wherever possible. Theres no reason to immediately reject any particular idea when it comes to effective studying or test prep because each student’s learning needs will be different. Sometimes students can get by with a standard solution to a problem, but sometimes more creative solutions are required. For example, students may need help with education technology, or they may need to develop advanced library skills. Whatever the situation may be study groups can help each other come up with a positive solution to each others academic issues. 3. Extracurricular activities Although its important to focus on the task at hand if students talk about academics all day every day they wont be as interested in maintaining attendance in their study group. Its important for students to be able to talk about fun things once in a while and make sure that everyone is getting a well-rounded college experience. Maybe the study group could all go to a movie together or grab a cup of coffee and go to a social club on campus. The more students focus on finding a balance between work and fun the more likely theyll be to stay in college, do well, and graduate to find an excellent career opportunity (READ: 10 Study Tips From an Irvine History Tutor). 4. Successful study habits One thing study groups should talk about is successful study habits that have worked for them in the past. Many students end up completing assignments an hour before they’re due and get totally stressed out. Time management tips are always welcome and simply going to the study group will help students organize their assignments. One person might need help with organization while another might need to learn how to speed read. Whatever the situation, talking about successful study habits will help the entire group improve. 5. Each student’s schedule Its also important for students to talk about the practical issue of each others schedules. Class schedules change each term and students will need to make sure they can all meet at the same time each week. Its a good idea for students to have several meeting times in hopes that everybody will be able to go to one or the other meeting. Additionally, students can consider meeting in a virtual environment if they can’t all get to the same place on campus at the same time each week. How to Teach Kids Chemistry

How to Teach Kids ChemistryThe age-old struggle for kids' hearts and minds between science and art is present to some degree in today's kids chemistry class. Your child's way of thinking about the world around them has a profound impact on their views and attitudes, not to mention the way they approach and learn about their science work, and so do the atmosphere and style of the classroom. The pace of a kids' chemistry class can be slow, which could frustrate and weary even the most patient student. If you want your child to reach her scientific goals as quickly as possible, you have to provide a stimulating atmosphere that is both interesting and exciting, with frequent group activities that foster group learning. There are plenty of ways to make this happen, but it is important to be realistic about your own teaching style.Science teachers must work to keep the pace as appropriate for the age of their students. For younger students, the current age for most classes is four years old , which is just about the right age for children to take a lot of instruction in math and science. Older children, on the other hand, usually turn seven or eight years old, which is a good time to begin introducing more complex concepts. Some older kids also like the challenge of group projects, because it forces them to think independently and problem solve.Other classroom dynamics also affect the pace of a kids' chemistry class. For example, when there is a large group of students studying in one room, a teacher might choose to teach them all at once rather than making individual lessons. By dividing the class into smaller groups, the teacher can move quickly through the material, which may mean more time spent working on individual projects. In smaller groups, the teacher can examine each group's needs in the context of the topic and develop lesson plans that help each group meet its needs.Along with practical applications of the subject matter, there are also psychological and p hysical aspects of learning about chemical reactions that must be addressed. For example, it is important to make sure that every student understands the importance of proper personal hygiene and does not assume that food stains are invisible. Science requires that students understand the relationship between elements and that elements will react when they are placed in certain conditions. These physical concepts and the mental ones also must be presented effectively in order to meet the objectives of the lesson. Too many students are likely to read a text, scan a chart, and then move on to the next task without realizing that they must really understand what they are learning.Kids must also be allowed to express their thoughts, opinions, and feelings. Because chemistry is a very abstract subject, you want every student to feel engaged in the learning process. In order to accomplish this, you will want to have some sort of group activity that motivates and encourages your student pa rticipants. These principles are all relevant to the chemistry curriculum and to how you approach teaching kids chemistry. Take the time to ensure that the chemistry class your child attends has been pre-designed to encourage group learning, and your child will feel much more engaged and relaxed. This will allow him or her to focus better on the subject, as well as develop stronger understanding.

Where to Find a Good Tutoring Service in Austin, Texas

Where to Find a Good Tutoring Service in Austin, TexasWhether you want to work with children in your community or perhaps the kids in another community, there are a number of options available to you, and most are very reasonable. You can find a number of tutoring services out there that provide parents the chance to do just that, but the challenge is how to choose the right one. There are a number of websites that offer these tutoring services, however, it can be hard to sift through all the offers. When choosing a tutoring service online, there are a few things that you will want to keep in mind to help you narrow down your options. When it comes to choosing a school, you will want to make sure that you visit the school before making a decision. The best tutoring services are those that are located within the community that you would like to tutor in. If you live in an area that does not have any good community colleges or high schools, this is probably not the right school for you. If you decide on a school that is situated close to your neighborhood, it should be convenient to get to and would offer the educational program that you are looking for.Depending on what your needs are, you will also need to decide on how many hours a week you will be able to attend. You will need to make sure that you set up your schedule such that you have time to spend tutoring. This can be easy to accomplish if you take classes at the same time as your tutoring sessions. However, if you have enough time, you may want to consider splitting up your classes to ensure that you have plenty of time to devote to your work.Your online experience will be different than when you visit a regular school, because you will be able to take more classes. You will want to make sure that the online tutoring is relevant to the subject that you are taking, if you do not learn much at the beginning. While some tutoring sites offer you assignments and tests for free, you will need to provide your o wn study materials and homework. This can be a real benefit if you learn a lot while you are taking your courses. While you are considering which tutoring service you are interested in, you will want to make sure that you review the services that are offered by other students in the school. What you learn at school about the subjects and other activities that you can participate in will be relevant to your experience with tutoring. What you learn in a tutoring session is going to be more important than the information that you learned during the actual lessons. You want to make sure that you are getting the information that you need, and this is one of the reasons why the online tutoring is so popular. You are able to take advantage of the convenience of being able to watch the sessions whenever you want, or during work breaks, when you have a bit of extra time.Even though online tutoring may be convenient, you should make sure that you understand how to use the service properly. One of the best ways to learn how to use the software and how to use the online tools that the tutoring company provides is to spend some time on their website.
